The Grinnell Glacier cirque in 1970. The glacier-carved amphitheater hosts famous features in Glacier National Park. The east side of the Garden Wall is the backdrop; the long white horizontal feature is the Salamander Glacier. Gem Glacier can be seen perched to the upper left. Grinnell Glacier itself cannot be seen; it is behind the gravel debris wall (below Salamander) it created as it has melted.

Salamander Glacier in 1970, as viewed from the trail to Grinnell Glacier. At one time these two glaciers were connected. Now they are joined by the melt waterfall from Salamander.

My dad, age 37, stands near a crevasse. We are protected against rain by a garbage bag with arm holes, and tennis shoes were the best footwear we could muster. This hike inspired him to take up backpacking as a hobby, and we later acquired better equipment.
