My life seems to be organized around “projects”; activities that take some time, involve an element of learning something, hopefully the acquisition of a new tool, and almost never are truly completed. Yes, the usual story is that some other project takes my focus, with new challenges to figure out. The old one is gradually and gently abandoned and, not yet ready for prime time, its materials and intellectual foundations are left to languish on workshop shelves and as pages of sketches and cursive descriptions in the notebooks that accumulate on my bookshelves.
Yet some of them get “close enough” to see the light of day. These survivors are shown to family and friends, and sometimes even merit a blog entry. I can usually see how it could have been done better, and if something else does not claim my attention, I am in danger of trying to refine it. Fortunately, I am easily distracted, and some new project will take me in yet another direction.
Here are a few of the projects that “made it”. Some are physical, others are more abstract or literary.
- This Odd House. A blog account of house and life renovation 2012-2013
- The Modern Eddington Experiment. In which, a century later, I attempt to reproduce the famous 1919 experiment that confirmed Einstein’s General Relativity
- Nightscape Odyssey. Travel stories from a summer sabbatical capturing the dark skies of the American northwest.
- Coffee Table Nightscapes. A quarter century of photographing the night sky
- Scandinavian Candelabras . Bringing some of the hygge home.
- Freezing soap bubbles. A wintertime activity in Minnesota.
- Reconstructing an early digital clock. In 1975, I made one of telephone relays and elevator readouts.
- Penrose Tiles. A porch floor provides an irresistible canvas.
- Salvaging Home Movies. Converted from 16mm film from the 1930s – 1960s.
- Viewmaster Reel. Depth from 2D with the help of AI.
- Timelapse projects. Here are some that I’m pleased with, but there is still much to learn.
- Personal essays and other items. I have found that some of my blog posts generate interest among those who follow along.
- Papers and Patents. Publications during my career.
